VITA Tax Prep Services

During tax season, IRS-trained UVA Community Credit Union employees can assist you with preparing and electronically filing your basic federal and Virginia state returns free of charge through the federal Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and our participation in the Cville Tax Aid Coalition. Tax returns that are efiled can help individuals receiving refunds get their money in as little as 7 to 10 business days! (Note: New law delays refunds for some taxpayers. Learn More.)

If you earned $55,000 or less from wages, self-employment or farming you might qualify. Eligible workers can get their Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) only if they file federal income tax returns – even if they are not otherwise required to file – and specifically claim the benefit.

Free tax preparation for eligible taxpayers is provided from January 29 – April 17, 2018, by appointment only, at six credit union branches:

  • East Jefferson
  • Fluvanna
  • Greene
  • Louisa
  • Nellysford
  • Zion Crossroads

New this year!

  • We are offering drop-off appointments - no need to sit and wait while your return is prepared.
  • We will be preparing basic returns for those with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Marketplace Insurance Certificates (Form 1095-A).
  • We can prepare basic tax returns if an individual has self-employment income reported in box 7 on a 1099 (less than $5,000), with no deductions, product inventory, or business loss.

To be eligible for free VITA tax preparation service, in addition to the household income restrictions, your tax return cannot include the following:

  • Itemized deductions requiring a Schedule A
  • Self-employment income requiring a Schedule C
  • Tip income
  • Rental income
  • Farm income
  • Military income
  • Adoption credits
  • Foreign income
  • Complicated or Advanced Schedule D (Capital Gains and Losses)
  • A debt from a mortgage or credit card canceled/forgiven by a commercial lender

Please note we can only prepare State Tax Returns for Virginia. Other restrictions may apply. Please contact our Call Center at 434-964-2001, option 3 for additional information.

What should I bring?

  • Government issued photo ID
  • Valid Social Security or ITIN cards and birthdates for taxpayer(s), and all dependents on the return
  • If married and filing jointly, both spouses must be present
  • All wage and income statements for filing year (e.g.: W-2, W-2G, 1099-R forms, 1099-INT, 1099-G, etc.)
  • Proof of child care expenses paid, including: provider's name, address and federal ID number
  • A copy of last year's federal and state returns, if available
  • Voided check or routing and account number for direct deposit of refunds

Why does the credit union provide free tax preparation services?

One of our primary goals is to help improve the financial lives of our community residents. Unfortunately, a large number of individuals don't realize they qualify for free tax preparation through VITA and are paying high fees for simple tax preparation and excessive interest for Refund Anticipation Loans or checks.

A significant number of people also fail to claim tax credits for which they are eligible, namely the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable tax credit for people who work but do not earn high incomes. Taxpayers who qualify and claim the credit could pay less federal tax, pay no tax, or receive a refund

Unfortunately, statistics show that as many as 25% of eligible taxpayers fail to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit. This means many families across the nation, and including in our community, are collectively losing millions of dollars each year in unclaimed tax credits. Your credit union wants to help these individuals/families claim the tax credits they deserve, allowing them to use these funds to help secure their financial future.

Last year alone UVA Community Credit Union’s volunteer sites prepared over 500 tax returns with an estimated economic impact of more than $1,000,000.
