VITA Tax Prep Services

During tax season, IRS-trained UVA Community Credit Union employees may be able to assist you with preparing and
e-filing your basic federal and Virginia state returns free of charge through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and our participation in the Cville Tax Aid Coalition.

UVA Community Credit Union uses IRS approved software to help taxpayers input and efile basic tax returns that fall within the scope of service for our tax sites. VITA preparers are not accountants or tax professionals, and are not able to provide specific tax advice. For complex or unusual returns please consult a tax professional.

Free tax preparation for eligible taxpayers is provided from January 31 – April 15, 2022, by appointment only, at six Credit Union branches:

  • East Jefferson
Our sites are now closed. Please e-mail us for help with an existing return.
  • Fluvanna
  • Greene
  • Louisa
  • Nellysford
  • Zion Crossroads

To be eligible, your household income must be less than $57,000 and your tax return cannot include:

  • Itemized deductions requiring a Schedule A
  • Self-employment income over $5,000 or requiring a Schedule C
  • Tip income
  • Rental income
  • Farm income
  • Military income
  • Adoption credits
  • Foreign income
  • Complicated or Advanced Schedule D (Capital Gains and Losses)
  • Securities Transactions (Form 1099-B)
  • State returns other than VA

Other restrictions may apply.

If you are able to do so, prior to your appointment, please print and complete your VITA Intake and Interview Form.

If COVID related staffing issues arise we may need to convert standard appointments to drop off appointments. If we need to close a tax site for any reason we will contact you as soon as possible to reschedule your appointment time. If you are experiencing any COVID symptoms, or if you have a fever please contact us to reschedule your appointment.

Why does the Credit Union provide free tax preparation services?

One of our primary goals is to help improve the financial lives of our community residents. Through this program eligible taxpayers can save money on tax preparation fees and avoid excessive interest for Refund Anticipation Loans.

Additionally, a significant number of people also fail to claim tax credits for which they are eligible, particularly the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The Earned Income Tax Credit is the federal government's most effective antipoverty program for working households. Providing additional income through a refundable tax credit for people who work but do not earn high incomes. In 2018 these working family credits lifted an estimated 5.6 million people out of poverty, including about 3 million children.1

Through this program your credit union helps both individuals/families and the community we serve.

Last year alone UVA Community Credit Union’s volunteer sites prepared over 800 tax returns with an estimated economic impact of more than $1.6 million for our community.
