Why does the Credit Union provide free tax preparation services?

One of our primary goals is to help improve the financial lives of our community residents. Through this program eligible taxpayers we can save money on tax preparation fees and help them avoid excessive interest for Refund Anticipation Loans.

Additionally, a significant number of people also fail to claim tax credits for which they are eligible, particularly the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The Earned Income Tax Credit is the federal governments most effective antipoverty program for working households. Providing additional income through a refundable tax credit for people who work but do not earn high incomes. In 2018 these working family credits lifted an estimated 5.6 million people out of poverty, including about 3 million children.1

Through this program your credit union helps both individuals/families and the community we serve.

Last year alone UVA Community Credit Union’s volunteer sites prepared over 800 tax returns with an estimated economic impact of more than $1.6 million for our community.
