UVA Community Credit Union Launches Food Drive to Combat Hunger This Summer

UVA Community Credit Union is asking the community to participate in its summer food drive taking place now through June 22. Non-perishable food items can be delivered to any of the Credit Union’s 14 branch locations located throughout Virginia’s Central Piedmont and Valley area. 

“UVA Community Credit Union is committed to enhancing the financial wellness of our communities. This summer, we are addressing the critical issue of hunger, which significantly impacts children and families who depend on school-provided subsidized meals. By combating hunger, we help alleviate one of the most immediate and pressing financial burdens for many families. When families don't have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, they can focus on other aspects of their financial well-being, such as saving for the future, paying bills, and investing in education,” said Susan Gruber, President/CEO of UVA Community Credit Union.

Statistics from the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank highlight the urgency of this initiative: one in every twelve children in the Blue Ridge region experiences food insecurity. These children face higher risks of chronic diseases, developmental delays, and mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. The summer months, when access to nutritious food becomes even more limited, can exacerbate these issues.

Donations from UVA Community Credit Union’s food drive will benefit the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and the Community Cupboard in Louisa. In addition to community donations, the Credit Union will make a monetary donation of $10,000 to help fight hunger this summer. 

Community members are encouraged to participate and make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. Together, we can help ensure that no child or family goes hungry this summer.
