Local High School Scholarship Program Guidelines

Scholarship Award

UVA Community Credit Union will provide a $1,500 needs-based scholarship to a graduating senior from each of the public high schools in our field of membership.

Student Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a high school senior attending one of the following high schools: Albemarle, Charlottesville, Culpeper County, Eastern View, Fauquier, Fluvanna County, Kettle Run, Liberty, Louisa County, Madison County, Monticello, Murray, Nelson County, Orange County, Rappahannock County, Southeastern Alternative School, Western Albemarle and William Monroe
  • Plan to attend a two-or four-year accredited U.S. college or university in the fall of 2018
  • Must hold a GPA of at least 2.5 (winner will be asked to provide a copy of their transcript)
  • May not be an employee, or child of an employee/board member of UVA Community Credit Union

Submission Process

  1. Complete the scholarship application
  2. Submit a 250 – 500 word essay (double-spaced using font size 12) on this year’s topic: “According to the Wall Street Journal, 42% of college freshman say they are ill-prepared to manage their finances. What are some things you can do over the next few years to ensure you are ready to manage your own finances?”
  3. Submit application and essay by April 2, 2018. Mailed applications must be postmarked by April 2, 2018.

  • The essays will be judged on content, style, and correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Judging will be conducted by a panel of judges from UVA Community Credit Union.

Winner Notification

A winner from each high school will be notified via phone/email by May 1, 2018. Winner will be asked to provide a copy of their school transcript.

UVA Community Credit Union will invite each recipient along with his or her parent or guardian to the Credit Union’s Annual Membership Meeting on May 23, 2018, where our Board of Directors and members of the Credit Union will recognize them.


All scholarship checks will be mailed directly to the student’s college or university. Winner will provide the Credit Union with their college/university student ID and mailing address. Checks will be credited for the fall semester.


All entries become the property of UVA Community Credit Union and by submitting the entry you authorize the Credit Union to utilize all or a portion of the information for publicity. Some examples include: press releases, publication in Credit Union newsletters, websites or social media, newspapers, trade magazines, etc. These announcements may include scholarships recipient’s name, contents of the entry, a photo, and other reported information.
